My photo essay is about an abandoned tunnel my friends and I found in Clinton, Massachusetts. I picked this place because I found it on a list of cool places in Massachusetts to visit and I thought it looked really scary. Anyone that knows me knows that I am the easiest person to scare in the world, but I figured that this would be a cool place to go with my friends and an even better place to take pictures.
With this essay, I hope to convey the different sides to every story. This tunnel is a place of both good and bad. There is graffiti everywhere and the tunnel is pitch black dark. It would actually be the perfect place to mug someone (hopefully that's never happened). Also, from a historical perspective, to build this tunnel engineers and workers had to dig up 4,000 bodies from a cemetery to relocate them. Some believe that the souls of the disturbed bodies still haunt the tunnel to this day. But, every situation is also what you make of it. In all honesty, this tunnel was extremely scary. While walking through, there was a lot of screaming involved. But, even in the darkness there is still light. In a scary place, I still managed to have a really good time with my friends. You can see this with all the smiles on my friend's faces, whether they are surrounded by darkness or posing in front of graffiti. And even when you think a situation is dark, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
To capture the story of my adventure, I sequenced the photos in order of when they were taken. So the photos start outside the tunnel, move through the tunnel and finally come out the other side. So there is a flow of light decreasing and then increasing again. To add to the scary vibe, it would be expected that I put the photos in a creepy filter or in black and white. But I decided to keep the photos in color because I love the bright graffiti colors and the other colors inside and outside the tunnel. I think keeping the series in color adds and supports the meaning being the essay.
